Charles Darwin

Born on 12th February 1809 into a wealthy family, Charles Robert Darwin had a pretty ordinary childhood. He didn’t enjoy or do well at school but he had, from an early age, a passion for nature – both collecting it and shooting it. He began studies to be first a physician then a clergyman, but he spent more time out of class, on the countryside collecting beetles. At 22 years old he was invited to serve as the resident naturalist on board the HMS Beagle for a five-year journey to South America and around the world.
